You know you've won your clients trust when they move to the other side of the world and still want you to design their home for them despite being a million miles away. For Nexus Designs Creative Director Sonia Simpfendorfer, Director Harley Anstee and Associate Narelle Cuthbert, this is precisely the kind of client/designer relationship their creative, can-do personalities attract.
Their Australian client had entrusted Nexus Designs with two previous projects in their native homeland, so after then moving across the world and into a former wrapping paper factory in the Tribeca precinct of New York, it seemed for them the natural choice to call upon their favourite designers to transform the 4th floor loft into a home. Armed with a brief to create a sense of 'Australia' in which they could retreat form their busy professional lives in the bustling island of Manhattan, we think the new designer loft fits the brief perfectly.
Lots of light, fresh irreverent bursts of colour, natural timbers and a relaxed, deconstructed look equals the quintessential Australian quality of not taking itself too seriously.
Taking inspiration from the Blue Mountains in New South Wales, the upholstery colour palette of a dusky blue and a purple haze is complimented by the bright yellow tones that pay homage to the native wattle tree.
In order to create a sense of sanctuary, the Nexus team divided a large open space into smaller zones and living areas so as to create a sense of intimacy which in turn effectively provides multiple zones for entertaining or relaxation, depending on the mood or occasion.
Australian style in downtown New York. Clearly a winning combination for this big bustling city.
